Speaker of Manipur Legislative Assembly, Yumnam Khemchand Singh today flagged off a cycle rally from Yumnam Leikai Lairembi lampak which carried the message of “Let’s make plastic free rivers” on saving the Rivers of Manipur.
The rally crossed Heirangoithong, Wahengbam Leikai, Nagamapal along the Nambul River side heading towards Khurai, Kongba, Uchekon Bashikhong along the Kongba River and back to the river bank at Nongmaishang (Singjamei) Bheigyabati leikai passing through Singjamei Kshetri Leikai where a concert on the same theme was held.
Khemchand Singh said though Manipur has been included in the second phase of Smart City, various awareness campaign taken up by today’s youth who are independent and government non registered body due to unavailability of proper waste materials plan including unclean city in the state is highly appreciated and everyone must give support.
The aim of the organisation equals the project to be taken up by the state government, these matters will be put up the concern minister and concern minister said the speaker. A seminar will also be organised along with the organization at the earliest on the theme of how a proper solid waste materials plan can be set up in the state to make it a proper smart city by bringing out a white paper to the people of the state, he added.
From the organiser’s side Tom Meisnam said that the main aim of cycle rally and river bank festival was just not only awareness campaign but a part of a protest to save the rivers of Manipur.
If entire systems of Solid waste management system, plastic re-cycle plan are set up in the state, solution to keep Nambul river and all the main rivers of Manipur clean and drinkable state can be set up with the current situation of the various rivers in Manipur, he added.
Tom appealed the people to stop dumping of garbage and waste materials at the river banks and government to bring out a solution to end the practice before rivers of Manipur becomes a dumping site in the near future.
